Consultant Surgeon

Mr Peter Veitch is a general surgeon with a particular interest in renal failure surgery, renal transplantation as well as upper GI surgery. He also has considerable expertise in laparoscopic surgery. His current appointment is as a consultant surgeon at the Belfast City Hospital but he has retained close links with his previous hospital, the Royal Free in London, where he still sees clients.

Mr Veitch has 15 years experience of medico-legal work both in personal injury and clinical negligence cases and has appeared at the Royal Courts on a number of occasions to give expert evidence.

He is fully familiar with the preparation and submission of reports on breach of duty and causation as well as condition and prognosis as well as the legal interpretation of 'duty of care' and how that has evolved through the concept of the 'Bolam test', the 'Bolitho case' and more recently the 'Montgomery case'.

Mr Veitch is aware of the Court rules in relation to experts' reports contained in Part 35 of the Civil Procedure Rules. He has appeared at the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand as an expert witness for both defendants as well as claimants in general surgery cases. He has also presented evidence to the General Medical Council Fitness to Practice Committee in transplant related cases.

Mr Veitch can take instructions on behalf of either claimant or defendant or as a Single Joint Expert and currently undertakes approximately 30-40 cases per year.
