Dental Expert Witness

Dr Alexander Michael is an experienced dentist and practice owner. Dr Michael has worked continuously in general practice since being awarded a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff in 2002.

He has extensive clinical experience in all aspects of restorative dentistry, including restoration of dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, gum disease treatment and oral surgery.

Having both a Master of Laws degree (LLM) in The Legal Aspects of Medical Practice, and Cardiff Law School Expert Witness Certification, ensures the legal issues relating to patient care are well understood.

He is able to analyse dental records and review standards of care. He provides objective opinions on medication, nerve damage, failure to refer for specialist treatment and damages resulting in pain and injury both now and in the future.

Dr Michael undertakes expert witness instructions, including the preparation of medico-legal reports and giving evidence in court, in personal injury and dental negligence cases relating to his areas of expertise. He can act on behalf of either claimant or defendant or as a Single Joint Expert. Cases undertaken include:

  • All aspects of patient complaints
  • Screening reports and general advice including telephone advice
  • Liability
  • Breach of Duty and Causation
  • Condition and Prognosis
  • Apportionment

Personal injury related to:

  • Road traffic accidents
  • Accidents at work
  • Catastrophic facial injuries

Clinical negligence cases relating to:

  • Mistakes in treatment leading to the loss or damage of multiple teeth
  • Periodontal – incorrect treatment for gum disease and misdiagnosis
  • General restorative – missed decay, poor standard of fillings, issues with crown and bridgework
  • Prosthetics – dentures and their provision
  • Implants – restoration issues and treatment planning
  • Root canal work
  • Soft tissues – cancer screening
  • Radiographs – frequency of X-rays, the review of those X-rays, misdiagnosis of issues visible
  • Delayed or incorrect diagnosis – including oral cancer misdiagnosis
  • Covid-19 compliance

Dr Michael has been asked to conduct dental practice inspections and also to provide opinion on General Dental Council investigations and rulings.
