Day of the Long Knives at MoJ

Picture of Chris Grayling for Expert Witness storyThe surprise elevation of Chris Grayling to the Cabinet post of Justice Secretary was not the only change of personnel at the Department of Justice. The department was one of the biggest casualties of the reshuffle, with just two ministers keeping their jobs. They are Liberal Democrat Lord McNally and Attorney General Dominic Grieve. The other high-profile casualty was Jonathan Djanogly, who steered the LASPO Act through Parliament.

Notable new entrants to the Department include Helen Grant, MP for Maidstone and The Weald. A member of the Labour Party until 2006, Ms Grant became the first black female Tory MP at the 2010 election. Her remit also includes women's and equality issues.

Other new faces are barrister Jeremy Wright, MP for Kenilworth and Southam since 2005, and former immigration minister Damian Green. Mr Wright specialises in criminal law, served on the Justice Committee in opposition and was made a government whip in 2010. Mr Green becomes the new Police Minister, replacing Nick Herbert in the joint Home Office/MoJ position.
