Dr Alistair D Adams
BSc (Hons) Physiology, MBChB, Diploma in Ophthalmology, FRCSEd, FRCOphth
During my 27 years as a consultant ophthalmic surgeon before my retirement in 2006, I introduced new techniques in cataract, glaucoma, lacrimal and oculo-plastic surgery, and produced a series of proformas for the diagnosis and treatment of various eye conditions.
I have long experience in cataract surgery, having started with intra-capsular cataract extraction, progressed to extra-capsular cataract surgery, and I was one of the first surgeons in Edinburgh to perform cataract surgery using phaco-emulsification.
Training and Examinations
As Programme Director (from 1993 to 2004), I supervised the training of all the junior staff, organising induction programmes, setting appropriate training objectives, and ensuring commitment to regular audit and appropriate research.
As Chief Examiner in Ophthalmology in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh I organised all the examinations in Edinburgh and in the Middle and Far East.
In September 2006, I completed two one-day courses on “Medico-Legal Report Writing – Core Skills” and “Medico-Legal Report Writing – Advanced Skills”, organised by Professional Solutions Training Consultancy, and in September 2013, I attended a one day course on "Courtroom Skills", organised by Bond Solon Training, London.
I had previously done a number of medico-legal reports, but attending these courses gave me a much better idea of exactly what legal professionals require from such a report.
I have done more than 390 medico-legal reports, which have been usually described as being particularly clear and understandable.
