Consultant Surgeon / Colorectal Surgeon
Consultant Surgeon and Lead Clinician for Colorectal Services at Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust. I am involved in the treatment of elective and emergency surgical conditions with my specialist interest in colorectal surgery to which I devote more than 90% of my time.
I have been involved in setting up the Multidisciplinary Team for colorectal cancer and I currently lead it and co-ordinate its activities. I have also been involved in the setting-up of a one-stop rectal bleeding clinic and have been involved in the training and subsequent supervision of two Specialist Nurse Endoscopists for this purpose.
I carry out a variety of level III colorectal procedures including reconstructive surgical procedures such as ileo-anal pouches, surgery for functional bowel disease and also surgical procedures for faecal incontinence and am currently in the process of achieving proficiency in laparoscopic colorectal procedures.
I am also an experienced colonoscopist and do a variety of advanced therapeutic procedures such as stenting of colorectal cancer, endoscopic mucosal resection and percutaneous endoscopic caecostomy.
I am actively involved in the teaching of specialist registrars. I am also an Honorary Lecturer for the University of Wales and participate in surgical teaching programmes. I am widely published and undertake research work. I am currently a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and also an internal examiner (Surgery) for the University of Wales.
