Ms Rachna Murthy is a Consultant Ophthalmologist, Aesthetic, Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgeon who until 2021 headed the Cambridge University Hospitals Thyroid Eye Disease Service providing quaternary oculoplastic care for the East of England region. Her service has been internationally recognised and she enjoys faculty status at numerous international meetings.

She is an experienced surgical trainer, not just in the NHS and for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, but also in the private sector where her academic safety work with dermal fillers and technical skills has led to her appointment as faculty of the Allergan Medical Institute. As the lead periocular skin cancer clinician for Ipswich, she also helped to pioneer innovative surgical approaches resulting in reduced patient attendance and cancer recurrence with improved cosmetic outcomes.

Ms Murthy has received expert witness training through Bond Solon Ltd. She is recognised as a global expert on the complications of fillers and has published and presented extensively in this area, including throughout Europe and the USA.

Ms Murthy undertakes expert witness instructions, including the preparation of medico legal reports and appearing in court, in personal injury and clinical negligence cases relating to her specialist areas of expertise. These include:

  • • Cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
  • • Complications of cosmetic eyelid surgery
  • • Brow lift surgery
  • • Periocular/orbital trauma including orbital fractures
  • • Periocular/orbital (eye socket) tumours and lesions
  • • Eyelid and orbital reconstructive surgery
  • • Loss of an eye and eye socket reconstructive surgery
  • • Artificial eye problems
  • • Ptosis (drooping eyelids)
  • • Entropion and ectropion
  • • Thyroid eye disease
  • • Watering eye problems
  • • Cataract
  • • Eye and eyelid problems in patients with facial palsy

Ms Murthy can take instructions on behalf of either claimant or defendant or as a Single Joint Expert. 

Ms Murthy is highly published and frequently invited to lecture internationally. She is a member of the European, British and American societies of ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Ms Murthy does not undertake instructions in cases involving non-accidental injury.
