Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Naresh K. Buttan specialises in general adult psychiatry and has been working as a consultant in the NHS since February 2008. He previously worked in Australia and India as a Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director since 2001.

His special interest areas are in transcultural psychiatry, asylum seekers and refugees’ mental health, impact of war, trauma and physical, emotional and sexual abuse on mental health, bullying and harassment at work and its impact on mental health.

He specialises in diagnosing and treating common and severe mental disorders such as:

• ADHD.
• Schizophrenia and psychoses including drug induced psychosis.
• Depression, bipolar mood disorders.
• Anxiety spectrum disorders including GAD, phobias, OCD and PTSD.
• Dissociative conversion disorders.
• Eating disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.
• Psychosexual disorders such as erectile dysfunction and impotence.
• Self-harming or suicidal behaviours.
• Personality disorders.
• Alcohol and drug dependence.
• Neuropsychiatry and functional neurological disorders.

He also specialises in using psycho-pharmacological (antidepressants, anti-psychotics, mood stabilizers) and psychotherapeutic treatments including CBT for mental illnesses.

Dr Buttan is experienced in providing specialist assessments for courts and tribunals in medico-legal cases, including those for asylum seekers and refugees, personal injury cases, family court cases, work related injury cases and work fitness cases.
