Ryan Shields
Senior Associate, Digital Forensics
Ryan Shields is an experienced digital forensics expert within S-RM’s Digital Forensics team, with extensive experience leading digital forensic investigations in high profile and complex disputes. Ryan’s work spans across a diverse range of industries and jurisdictions, where he specialises in presenting digital evidence from a range of data sources including, but not limited to computers, mobile devices, emails, and cloud-based evidence. He has acted as an expert in various criminal and civil matters, providing both written and oral testimony in court.
Throughout his career, Ryan has led investigations into employee misconduct, IP theft and misuse of confidential information, cyber incident response, document falsification and evidence tampering, fraud, criminal defence, and a range of bespoke and sensitive private matters.
Notably, Ryan was appointed as an expert in a multi-million-dollar unfair prejudice petition in which he investigated the authenticity of documents and chat messages. His report on the matter of authenticity was critical for parties to reach a settlement. In another significant case, Ryan served as an expert witness for an airline catering company seeking to freeze several million dollars following a business email compromise of a senior executive. His expert report demonstrated the methods used by the attacker, which was critical in securing a court order to block the fraudulent transfer of funds.
Ryan is also appointed as an expert advisor in the high-profile Wirecard matter, where he is acting for a British national facing criminal charges in Singapore. As part of the Defence team, he provides strategic advice to legal counsel and supports the cross-examinations during live court proceedings.
He holds a BEng (Hons) in Digital Security, Forensics & Ethical Hacking, an MSc (with Distinction) in Cyber Security. He is GIAC Certified Cloud Forensic Responder (GCFR) and has attained multiple other industry-recognised certifications.
Before joining S-RM, Ryan was a Technical Responder in Deloitte’s Cyber Incident Response team and spent several years conducting digital forensic investigations in UK law enforcement and government agencies.
