Consultant Gastroenterologist

Dr Patrick Allen has been in medico-legal practice for 15 years, in the fields of personal injury and medical negligence. He has an approximately even split between claimant and defendant instructions and has supplied reports for the UK courts and Republic of Ireland.

Dr Allen is also interested in Disability with regards Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and has published research and collaborated with Australian, European and American institutions regarding this.

He has been a Consultant in Gastroenterology for 15 years and was a clinical and research fellow in St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne prior to taking up his consultant post. He has been involved with research since 1999.

Dr Allen is chair for the NI GI Research Network and liaises closely with the UK research network. He leads a GI research team in Gastroenterology and currently has 14 clinical trials in progress in his institution where he is primary investigator.

His areas of expertise include:

• General Gastroenterology, Oesophageal Disease, Achalasia, Reflux, Barrett’s Oesophagus, Peptic Ulcer, Stomach Ulcer, Coeliac Disease, Endoscopy, OGD, Capsule Endoscopy and General Medicine.
• Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Diverticular Disease, Diverticulitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Complications after Intestinal Resection.
• Holiday Illness, Travellers Diarrhoea, Gastroenteritis and Food Poisoning.
• Cancer - Oesophageal, Stomach, Gastric Cancer, Liver Cancer, Colon Cancer, Bowel Cancer. Colonic Polyps, Gastroscopy, Endoscopy, OGD, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, Colonoscopy, Complications from Endoscopy and Missed Cancer at Endoscopy.
