Senior Specialty and Associate Specialist Doctor in Forensic Psychiatry

Dr Antonio Curatola is a Senior Specialty and Associate Specialist doctor in Forensic Psychiatry with over 15 years’ experience in England and Wales. He currently works with the forensic team at St Cadoc’s Hospital (Aneurin Bevan University Health Board - Wales) and as the Forensic Psychiatrist for HMP Usk and HMP Prescoed. He is approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act and has specialist expertise in the assessment and treatment of mental illness.

Dr Curatola's medico-legal work is informed by extensive clinical experience, leadership within forensic services and a commitment to clarity in communication between mental health and the legal system.

His specialist areas of expertise include:

  • Fitness to plead and assessments of criminal responsibility
  • Psychiatric risk assessments, including violence, sexual offending and arson
  • Mental capacity assessments (litigation, testamentary, financial, care decisions)
  • Personal injury and psychiatric consequences of trauma
  • Psychiatric negligence cases
  • Pre-sentence psychiatric reports assessments
  • Reports under the Mental Health Act 1983/2007 (including Part III cases)
  • Adult and old-age psychiatry within forensic and secure settings
  • Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS) assessments 

Additional focus and experience:

  • Over 60 criminal expert witness reports for Solicitors firm, the Parole Board, Magistrate and Crown Court in the past 4 years
  • Over 20 legal reports for Part III of the Mental Health Act in the past 5 years
  • Capacity and DOLS assessments under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 for the last 10 years
  • DOLS work for Ceredigion, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taff, and Gwent Borough Councils  

Court work:

  • Experience giving oral evidence in Crown Court, Magistrates’ Court, Parole Board and Mental Health Tribunals
  • Experience in high-profile and sensitive cases requiring discretion
