The two men convicted of killing honeymooners Ben and Catherine Mullany refused to give evidence during their trial.

Their silence was described as "deafening" by one prosecutor – it became even more so as the wealth of evidence connecting them to the killings became apparent during the trial in the Antiguan capital of St John's. Avie Howell and Kaniel Martin protested their innocence throughout the two-month trial, but a jury handed down a guilty verdict yesterday after 10 hours' deliberation.

A Jailed teenager who was linked to a wave of shootings across the city has used his Facebook account to boast about gun shootings.

Stewart Rimmer was 16 when he fired a machine pistol at a Huyton home where children were playing.

Rimmer, of Kirklees Road in Southport, was jailed indefinitely at Liverpool Crown Court last year after the 17-year-old admitted possessing firearms, possessing a weapon while committing an offence and possessing ammunition.

'Cold case' unit to be set up to tackle unsolved crimes

A special "cold case" unit is to be set up to tackle Scotland's unsolved murders and other serious crimes.

Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland said the specialist unit would review unsolved cases to identify those which merit a fresh investigation.

New forensic techniques, including DNA, improved ballistics and fingerprint databases will be used.

Mr Mullholland said: "Justice will pursue down the years those who have so far evaded detection for their crimes."

DNA database to be used in Air France crash investigation

French authorities will utilise a Brazilian DNA database to aid with the identification of recently recovered bodies from the wreckage of Air France flight 447.
