Cancer Research UK-funded scientists have shown how a promising new class of drugs might be used to treat aggressive forms of pancreatic cancer, according to a study published in Nature.

Pancreatic cancer kills around 8,000 people every year and, although survival rates are gradually improving, fewer than one in five patients survive their disease for a year or more.

The Clay Cross redevelopment scheme triumphed in the regeneration category last night at the prestigious RICS Awards 2012 in the East Midlands region.

Located in North East Derbyshire, the small town of Clay Cross underwent a transformational change following the completion of phase one in the £30million New Bridge Street regeneration scheme. The complex project completed in January 2011, reclaimed approximately 20 acres of derelict land to rejuvenate it into a mixed use scheme incorporating retail, Dr’s Surgery and public space. Over 100,000 cubic metres of colliery spoil was removed from the site prior to development.

On 19 April the annual conference of APIL, the Association of Personal Injury lawyers was treated to what one of its founder members, Roger Pannone, described as “probably the best I've ever heard from a president”.

The speech was made by APIL’s incoming president Karl Tonks and it took the form of a sustained attack on insurance companies, the Government and LASPO.

A forensic science laboratory where high-profile criminal cases have been dealt with is to close its doors at the end of the month.

The work undertaken by the scientists in Wetherby, West Yorkshire, is to be transferred to a private firm in Wakefield with the loss of 130 jobs.

The Home Office has said the service was economically unviable and incurred "huge losses".

Union Prospect said it was "deeply disappointed" by the closure.
