New regulator claims expert fears over accreditation

Expert witnesses having nothing to fear from moves towards accreditation, according to the Government's new Forensic Science Regulator.

Andrew Rennison has been appointed by the Home Office following concerns over a series of cases in which the quality of expert evidence was called into question.

His brief from the Home Office is to establish and monitor quality standards across all forensic science services to the criminal justice system.

Speaking to SEW News at the annual Bond Solon Conference, Mr Rennison said that "If you are working for an organisation that has the appropriate ISO standards in place that helps demonstrate your expertise. If you haven't got those standards in place, that doesn't mean you are not an expert. I'm quite clear about that."
