Review "turning point" for health and safety

A Government review published today could mark a "turning point" for health and safety in the UK, the profession’s largest international body said today.

IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) said it broadly welcomed Lord Young’s recommendations, which include a clampdown on "absurd" applications of health and safety legislation and measures to make it easier for teachers to organise school trips.

IOSH Chief Executive Rob Strange said: "We warmly welcome this review. We are sick and tired of hearing of misinterpretations of health and safety laws which end in the cancellation of perfectly safe activities.

Hse Welcomes Lord Young's Report On Health And Safety

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) today warmly welcomed the publication of Lord Young’s report into health and safety.

HSE has already been working with others to develop responses to two of the recommendations:

• a 20-minute online risk assessment for offices, which was launched today, with other web tools for similarly low-risk workplaces to follow
• a new Occupational Safety Consultants Register (OSCR), which will be set up in January 2011.

Welsh people will be treated as “second class citizens” in comparison to their English counterparts if
proposals by the Welsh Assembly Government are agreed, say legal reform campaigners.

The Assembly’s failure to heed advice on plans for the NHS in Wales to become the “judge and jury” of its
own medical errors will result in the legal rights of injured Welsh people being restricted.

French Implants Test 'inconclusive' Implants ‘Sweat’ Irritant Silicone Even Without Rupture

London – 29 September, 2010 – As new test results from the French Competent Authority (AFSSAPS) into controversial PIP breast implants cannot entirely rule out genotoxicity (DNA cell disruption), the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (www.baaps.org.uk), re-issues safety recommendations for women in the UK who have PIPs. In line with AFSSAPS, the BAAPS, the not-for-profit organisation established for the advancement of education and practice of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery for public benefit, recommends all women who have these implants undergo an ultrasound within the next six months to determine rupture or weakening. Should this be encountered even in one implant, the advice is unequivocal: both should be removed.
